Benjamin VanHoose

As an avid pop culture fan with a brain that somehow stores movie trivia and celebrity feuds better than any other type of information, People Magazine could not have been a better fit for me. From the first day I walked in the Time Inc. building and settled in at my desk, I felt at home in the offices.

Not only are the employees unbelievably helpful and understanding (can we bury the Devil Wears Prada stereotype already?), I never felt like the unwanted intern that got lost in the mix and left to do unfulfilling work. It was actually quite opposite.

I was given actual responsibilities, asked to complete short web article posts, conduct phone interviews and attend press events. Everything I figured I wouldn't get to do until well into my career, I was doing as an intern. I got to interview some amazing celebrities — who I will now shamelessly name-drop: Michael Strahan, Alyssa Milano, Naomi Watts, Kirstin Maldonado of Pentatonix and Bella Thorne.

But, of course, my summer wasn’t all glamorous red carpets. Facts were checked, mail was opened, books were sorted and – most importantly – interviews were transcribed. But I will say, I was never sent to fetch coffee. Court documents maybe, but never coffee.

This internship not only gave me a ton of clips to add to my portfolio, but it introduced me to some of the greatest people I will ever meet. I was given a test run of the career I always thought – and now know – is right for me.
